PROJECT INFORMATION FOR NEBRASKA ARTISTS
NEBRASKA by HEART is a Public Art Project sponsored by Lead Up (Formerly Hope College Center-Boys Hope Girls Hope) and the Sadie Dog Fund, and is endorsed by the NE 150 Celebration. It is promoted as a not-to- be-missed component of the Nebraska Sesquicentennial and a destination for millions of appreciative Nebraska, national and international visitors!
The Sponsoring organizations reflect grass-roots Nebraska values and hope to raise funds and awareness about their goals. Lead Up connects youth to college and career. Through the power of mentoring, peer leadership and academic support, we transform the lives of underrepresented students who become drivers of economic development and growth. The Sadie Dog Fund is a Lincoln organization which celebrates the human-animal bond. Through education, prevention and veterinary grants, it works statewide with Nebraska veterinarians to provide the necessary funds to keep dogs, in emergency medical situations or with special needs, alive and in their homes with the families that love them. This offers an alternative to neglect, euthanasia or surrender.
We have seen Cows in Chicago, J. Does in Omaha and Bikes in Tour de Lincoln. NEBRASKA by HEART will feature a 6’ fiberglass heart sculpture, representative of Nebraska, the heartland of America.
The project offers Nebraska Artists an opportunity to use their creative talent and imagination to paint, design and otherwise manipulate and/or add onto the six-foot- tall Heart(which includes the base) for outdoor display, from May 1 to mid October, 2017.
THE HEART AND BASE
The heart will be 24” deep. The base will be 4′ 6″ wide and measures 32″ deep by 12″ tall…and therefore it will be able to fit through a standard door. The base is NOT separate from the Heart; it’s all one sculpture. Each sculpture/base will weigh approximately 100 pounds. Sandbags will be added to the base at public display time to keep it secure. In addition, a steel rod will be incorporated into each heart and its base for strength.
Each Heart will be delivered to the Artist’s work space, anywhere in Nebraska, soon after the Sponsorship occurs (September 10, 2016 – December 15, 2016). Completed Hearts must be returned to Lincoln at a designated site (TBD) by or before April 15, 2017.
